The art, passion, and the commitment – they all come together in Dance at Tolleson Union High School.
Tolleson Dance promotes contemporary dance styles as a medium that uniquely communicates meaning, emotion, and finding purpose through artistry. It is a program that encourages students to rigorously investigate dance, to develop their imaginations and to create their own unique artistic voices. Mrs. Heidi Wilkes and the Tolleson Dance students are deeply committed to the progression of artistry and sharing knowledge to deeply engage in the art form.
Dance is a specialized area of the performing arts that demands a high level of physical rigor and awareness. Tolleson Dance prepares students to critically examine the history, aesthetics, and global context of dance and its relation to other art forms and contemporary issues. Tolleson Dance offers an integrated curriculum that combines the creative process with history through many mediums and technologies, unleashing students’ imaginations and providing them with the skills necessary to realize them. Tolleson Dance aims to develop an open and safe environment that encourages a deep sense of individual curiosity, exploration, and inquiry.
Tolleson Dance is a club that supports 140 students on campus. Students in dance participate in multiple shows throughout the year that promote the arts and dance in their community. Tolleson Heat, the school's official dance team, is the elite team that represents Tolleson Dance in the community and nationally. As of 2014, Heat qualified for the USA Dance National Competition for the first time in Tolleson's 88-year history.
