Desi Student Government is a very unique club. We are a small school within the PUHSD for students with Emotional Disabilities. What this means is we have students that struggle with anything from severe anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, mild mental retardation, ADHD/ADD, anger issues, aspbergers, etc. The goal is to support students in learning to manage themselves to be successful at a large comprehensive campus or in life/job/career. Some students choose to stay with us because of the smaller campus and classes. We do not have any other clubs on campus so our Stugo does EVERYTHING. Everything means: student recognition, field trips, class unity, anti-bullying, yearbook, student activities, spirit weeks, fundraising, run a rec room, community service, dances....etc. Our Stugo runs it all. We have committees for everything and the students join the committees within Stugo to work on various goals, projects and activities for the school. However, as stated before we are very small (only 120-140 students) and we have only 12 teachers and a total of 35-40 staff altogether. Our student population is also one of the most economically challenged in the district. Fundraising is our biggest issue and since our students come for campuses all over the Phoenix area, we are especially challenged with transportation issues for any after school or weekend events. We do what we can though and our students are dedicated and are consistently working on learning leadership skills and how to manage themselves. They work very hard with the little resources we have. We have had many students transform through Stugo from students that had crippling anxiety blossoming into confident and outspoken individuals. Fighters become peacekeepers and students who isolated became positive social leaders. I have been working with Stugo for the past 9 years and I am constantly inspired by the growth and transf ormation I see each year. Last year we held our 1st graduation for our Seniors because the students said that's what they wanted. Usually they walk with their homeschools, but due to students' requests, we made it happen and now it will be a tradition. Most of our students have never even been on their comprehensive campus and no connection to it. Desi is their family and they would rather graduate with us. Some do both which is even more awesome! Our students have great ideas we just need some support in making them happen. Our Stugo Vision is: to create a safe, peaceful, positive and fun environment where students want to be and where they feel succesful, supported and unified. Our goals for this year are: 1. Anti-bullying week and ongoing interventions/education. 2. Unify the classes (amongst each other) 3. Support struggling/invisible students. 4. Acknowledge student achievement more. 5. New student mentoring program. 6. Staff recogntion/appreciation . We already do several community service projects a year and they are committed to get more students involved in those as well. I hope that gives you a good picture. If not, please contact me and I will tell you more. I am very passionate about these kiddos! They overcome a lot and work very hard.
