The Genesis Aztecs Basketball Program was launched in 2007. Competitive athletic programs enhance the quality and overall value of academic institutions in many ways. Competitive league play offers participants an active opportunity to build teamwork and cooperative skills, to acquire an appreciation for the benefits of physical fitness and repetitive practice, to learn sportsmanship, and to raise one’s level of self-esteem. Beyond the arenas of practice and play, competitive sports also enhance the academic side of the student athlete by requiring a minimum level of scholastic standing as a qualifying standard for participation. Specific to Genesis, student athletes are also required to attend one hour of after-school tutoring three days per week. The basketball program also promotes active community service projects throughout the city. Each player must complete 35 hours of community service prior to graduation. Last year, a graduating senior member of the basketball team completed over 100 hours of community service.
Genesis Academy must fundraise each year to support the basketball program. Genesis Academy is at a disadvantage compared to other schools since we cannot count on the financial support of our students' parents.
