Support Can be the Difference Between Sink or Swim
I was brought onto the Support My Club team almost a year ago, but have been volunteering with the organization for years. As the Programs Manager, my role is to work with the school sponsors and district administration to discover needs of students and equip them to gain as much community support as possible. It’s incredible to see what these students are capable of if they have the tools needed, and I can certainly relate to them which brings an even deeper connection to my job. As a high schooler who needed something like Support My Club, I’m thrilled to bring this resource to young people across the state.
Growing up in an athletic family, I knew I wanted to play a sport in high school but couldn’t seem to find the right fit. I joined the swim team after a basketball knee injury because I was told it’d be good for recovery and had always loved the water. From the beginning, my coaches saw something in me that I clearly did not… they told me they would make a distance swimmer out of me and I admittedly laughed in their faces!
My endurance was awful in general, and swimming was a higher level altogether. But… they continued to push me. I started off in the slowest, most unskilled lane possible not even able to flip without assistance to keep me heading in the right direction. While I certainly had a passion for the water and was determined to master it, there was definitely a rising level of frustration my first few weeks on the team. Coaches stayed late, pulled me aside, and really helped me break down where the mechanics of my stroke were falling off course. Slowly but surely I worked my way from the “beginner” lane to one of the top 2, and was consistently amazed to see my own progress.
Needless to say, I was ecstatic! Coaches continued to support me through training, and I qualified as an alternate to compete in State. My senior year I made it to state as well. It was an intense lifestyle of long afternoons in the sun and Saturday mornings in the pool, but swim came at such a perfect time in my life… A time where I needed a support system, something where I could see the direct effect of my efforts, and a way to keep my mind off of things, stay motivated, and genuinely enjoy myself!
The sky is the limit, and I love traveling to see as much of this big world as I can. But enjoying home and taking DaisyMae for a walk certainly has its charm.
