Arizona ranked in the Top 10 for Afterschool Programs
Arizona was named one of the “Top 10 States for Afterschool” in 2009. The survey was conducted by the Afterschool Alliance, based on their America After 3PM study.
America After 3PM found that 16 percent of Arizona schoolchildren are enrolled in afterschool programs, up from 12 percent in 2004. “Arizona is ahead of the pack on afterschool, and can be proud of that,” said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. “But the data also show another side of the story. The majority of Arizona parents who want their kids in afterschool programs aren’t able to find them, usually because programs aren’t available, they can’t afford the fees, or transportation issues make it impossible. These are all barriers we can and should overcome. Quality afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. Every Arizona family that needs an afterschool program should have access to one.”
There’s definitely been a substantial growth in the amount of children in Arizona who participate in extracurricular activities within the last five years; however, 22 percent are still home alone in the afternoons and older siblings are caring for another 11 percent of them.
“We’re proud of the progress we’ve made in providing afterschool for Arizona’s kids and families,” said Melanie McClintock, Executive Director of the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence. “But we’ve clearly got our work cut out for us.. For afterschool programs to meet the huge unmet demand from families, they’re going to need more support from all sectors – from the business and philanthropic communities, as well as from the government at all levels.”
That’s where our organization comes in. Our goal to provide students with the items they need to succeed in afterschool programs, such as clubs and sports, is quickly garnering attention and stamina. Within the last year, we’ve made it possible for online donors to give nearly $20,000 to high schools in need. We’re thrilled that our continuing efforts to assist Arizona in providing excelling extra-curricular activities for teenagers are expanding, as we now have 20 schools signed up on our website.
We look forward to the future of Support My Club, and are proud to be a part of one of the top 10 states for afterschool programs!
